Queenstown Winter Festival ranks in Top 10 festivals

Queenstown’s Winter Festival has been ranked as one of the world’s Top 10 must-see festivals by a major Australian website.

Yahoo!7 Travel, which provides news, online travel guides, booking and reservation services, has rated the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival as the fourth best festival in the world.

The festival ranks higher than the likes of New Orleans’ Jazz Festival, Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls, Oktoberfest, and the Sydney and Melbourne festivals.

Festival Director Simon Green is rapt with the result and says it’s a testament to everyone who’s worked on the festival since it began in 1975.

“The festival originally started because some locals thought the start of winter was a great excuse for a party so they organised some mountain races, a couple of concerts and a ball. Everyone thought it was such a great idea that it just snowballed and people started coming from all around the district.

“Over the years it’s evolved into the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest winter party and now takes a whole year to plan!

“Some things never change though - the best thing about our festival is that it still’s still true to its roots. It’s run by the people for the people and is all about celebrating who we are, what we are and where we are. For locals it’s a great chance to get together and celebrate winter living and for visitors it’s a great time to come because town is absolutely buzzing, the ski fields are open and there’s a real party atmosphere.

“Each year we ensure there are plenty of accessible and free events to keep the community involved and this year about 75 percent of our events are free.”

For the full list of Yahoo!7 Travel’s Top 10 Festivals please visit http://au.travel.yahoo.com/tenbest/world-festivals/.

Winter Starts Here!! The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival programme is now available in hard copy and online. For more information visit the Festival website www.winterfestival.co.nz.

El Bolson, Argentina---Mountain Magic!

Mirror Lake Reflections
By Roy Heale

One of the most memorable parts of any visit to Argentina's Lake District is driving around the countryside, enjoying the Andes' mountain and lake vistas, plus visiting the small townships. Although San Carlos de Bariloche is the heart of this region, within a few hours journey there are many smaller and distinctive communities with their own unique characteristics. Any time spent traveling around this domain is rewarded with spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, crystal clear blue lakes, and villages with a definite Alpine flair.

During my recent visit to this area I was fortunate enough to have local gay travel expert Cristian Signorelli, of Bariloche Gay Travel, guiding me around the Lake District. One of our leisurely day trips was a journey south into Patagonia to the small town of El Bolson where the specialties are local crafts, home-brewed beers, and the most amazing fresh fruit juice cocktails. It's a short two-hour drive from Bariloche and the mountain roads weave through the immense “mirror reflection” Lakes Guttierrez, Mascardi, and Guillelmo alongside numerous meandering mountain streams and rivulets. With such breathtaking vistas the journey seems much shorter than the actual time lapsed.

Upon arrival in the town of El Bolson the Alpine-styled architecture and historical buildings are immediately apparent. In the heart of the town is the Plaza Pagano. It's a beautiful park with grassy banks and a large central pond surrounded by the local artisans' stalls of the world famous El Bolson Regional Fair. This open-air market brings together artisans, a farmer's market---which includes freshly picked wild fruits---musicians, painters, sculptors, writers, and all kinds of talented artists, plus a street band. This fair is a cultural gathering and an historical part of El Bolson, dating back to the early '70s. Today it retains the style and aura of that decade. It is a world-renowned artisan market and provides approximately four hundred year-round jobs, increasing to six hundred during the tourist season. Visitors journey from all over Argentina and around the world for this traditional Latin experience.

After strolling the pathways of this Fair, numerous outdoor cafés and restaurants are ready and waiting to give you a real taste of El Bolson local cuisine. A variety of cheese boards with smoked salmon, trout, venison, hare, wild boar, and locally made pickles can be found on the gourmet menus. Plus local dishes such as homemade pasta with cream sauce and morels---wild mushrooms---or rolls of Patagonian lamb, a trout Roquefort, vegetable strudel, a delicious plate of endive gratin, or Sorrento stuffed with smoked trout smothered in walnut cream sauce, will tempt any discriminating palate. And of course some wonderful Argentine Malbec wines must be sampled or one of the ten varieties of locally brewed beers will refresh you on a hot summer day. The gentle pace of life in this small community becomes instantly infectious.

If you prefer an extended visit to this magical mountain community then Bariloche Gay Travel can assist you with bookings at gay-friendly hotels. They have carefully selected charming Alpine-style accommodations where a warm welcome is extended to all LGBT travelers.

Before heading back to Bariloche a short drive up the mountain dirt roads will reward you with spectacular views of the River Quemquemtreu valley and mountains. Along this short journey many colorful wild flowers and bushes flourish and you will observe the locals fruit-picking to create those wonderful fresh juice drinks back at the fairgrounds.

A day trip to El Bolson is more than just a tour around Argentina's Lake District---rather it is an Argentine cultural experience with a journey back in time to a relaxed and gentle pace of life.

Be Hawaiian - Aloha LGBT

One of the exciting parts of tourism is discovering new places, making friends and connecting and reconnecting with people around the world.

This is why when I discovered Aloha LGBT it was wonderful to something old but something new.

Aloha LGBT offers you a unique opportunity to feel totally comfortable in a hidden Hawaii that no one else sees at any price.

  • Indigenous healers.
  • Sacred spaces.
  • Incredible psychic / spiritual power.
  • You have never had Hawaii like this.

And today the following new site sister site was launched.

What does it mean to be Hawaiian?

Being Hawaiian is based in three ideas: aloha, ho'opono pono and huna. Aloha means love, ho'opono pono means to create the right path for self and others and huna means the hidden. And so the tenets of always being Hawaiian as you go through your life would be:

Live with love, kindess and generosity in your heart and have the compassion to do something for others not as fortunate.

Take complete responsibility for your actions and never pretend not to understand the true consequences of those actions for all people involved.

Always remember that for you, all of those around you, and the for the planet itself that there is much more going on than meets the eye and that it is always best to find the source.

Crawfords - New Classic Accommodation in Arrowtown

It’s impossible to find a single tree in early 1860s renderings and photographs of Arrowtown, so the transformation since first settlement has been nothing less than extraordinary.

Some of the first seedlings were lovingly planted by one Constable William Brown, who was stationed at the Arrowtown police camp in the 1870s. At that time the police encampment on Camp Lane and Buckingham Street occcupied some 10 acres and included a drill hall, court house (built in 1895), the constable’s house and station.

When the forward thinking green-fingered police officer moved on after 12 years of horticulture effort, he left a legacy which the ‘Otago Witness’ described as ‘a vertitable botanical gardens laid out with exquisite taste, and kept in the most exemplary order’, and one which tourists recognise today.

As outbuildings rose and fell, a new police residence and office was erected in 1900. In time a garage was erected adjacent to the main house in a space which was variously used as police barracks and a horse stable. This outbuilding was later reincarnated as B&B accommodation – known as OLD NICK, and eventually a day spa.

Today the constable’s house, stables and the adjacent 1867 goal, are the only buildings left on the original site.

Attracted by the history, natural beauty and unique qualities of Arrowtown, the historic category 3 residence was purchased in early 2010 by Australians, Henry and Nina Crawford, who have renovated the accommodation wing of OLD NICK and rebranded the business as Crawfords.

Crawford, who is known for his sense of style and attention to detail is no stranger to high-end hospitality. In 1987 the Emmy award winning Australian TV producer landed on a remote beach in Fiji and set about creating what was to become an iconic resort which regularly found itself in ‘World’s Best’ lists.

‘Vatulele’, this product of his fertile imagination, was ultimately named ‘Hotel Luxury Hotel of the Year in 2000. Henry served as an International Board Member of SLH for 5 years, representing members with a geographic spread from Hawaii to Japan and India.

After 20 years playing in the tropics, Henry, and his wife, Nina, have opted for a quieter lifestyle and the cooler Southern NZ climate.

Says Henry, “we have always been attracted to the Queenstown area and spent three years looking for the right property to transform into something more intimate than our Fiji venture, which we sold in 2007. This area gives us a great opportunity to create an interesting new accommodation product in Arrowtown/Queenstown”.

“We believe Arrowtown has tremendous growth potential with its great restaurants, history museum, three 18 hole golf courses, wonderful walking tracks (which I use daily) and close proximity to the two major local ski fields, “ said Henry. “We believe we are extending and supplementing the town’s current room inventory with a more ‘designer’, but comfortable option.”

And, adds Henry, “we think that Constable Brown would be justifiably proud if he could see the the outcome of his planting – especially the two magnificent listed trees we have on the site. They are just fantastic specimens, and testament to Arrowtown’s tough tree protection policy”.

Crawfords is located on Buckingham Street. The homestead, OLD NICK, is set well back from the road in spacious gardens, with wonderful mountain views, yet is conveniently located only a couple of minutes walk away from the town centre with its charming cafes and restaurants and olde worlde shops.

Between developing this new hospitality experience with Nina, Henry publishes an electronic newsletter devoted to the world’s best luxury lodges (www.luxurylodge.com).

Urban Walkabouts: Sydney's Hip Neighborhoods, Hotels, Cafes & Nooks

For travel assistance please contact the Rainbow Tourism Concierge. More information on our Website, Facebook, Twitter and You Tube.

In the old days of gay ghettos, we had sneaky hide-outs for safety reasons. Today, for example, Sydney sneakiest hideouts are off-the-beaten track for hip reasons. Find them, and you don't want to tell but your closest friends.

This day, we went walking around Sydney's trendy neighborhoods - Surry Hills, Paddington, and Woollahra - in search of Cafe Nookie for cheap fuel, Sticky Bar off a Crown Street laneway for drinks, and the perfect place for a grass picnic with good grafiti walls at the $10 million restored Paddington Reservoir Gardens. All worth the effort on a autumn-like day.

Fellow explorer and ex-pat, Edmund.

We also canvassed some of the boutique hotels on the route, like Sullivan's Arts Hotel in Paddington and Medina Executive Apartments on Crown St.

PS We needed a Thai foot massage after clicking 10 kms over 3 hours, but we could skip the gym that day.
For more ideas, pick up copies of Sydney Guide Maps for Urban Walkabout Surry Hills & Darlinghurst, Potts Point & King Cross, Paddington & Woollahra, and the Sydney CBD shop-eat-play map.

One week walkabout in Tasmania

The island state of Tasmania is a place of wild beauty. There are dense rainforests, dramatic mountain peaks, alpine lakes and meadows, wild rivers, rugged coastline, and scenic farmland.

Historic convict-built buildings are common in Tasmania, while the wildlife is often easier to spot than elsewhere particularly in the evening, when the marsupials come out to play.

Tasmanians are friendly and welcoming, and the state has a reputation for producing some of Australia’s finest food.

You can cover quite a lot of territory in a week, but it calls out for a longer stay too.

Day 1
Tasmania’s state capital is Hobart. It’s a cosy, attractive town set on the Derwent River estuary.

Head first to Salamanca Place, Hobart’s cultural hub. Here you’ll find historic sandstone buildings featuring a range of art and craft stores, galleries, cafes and bars.

Each Saturday, Salamanca Place hosts the bustling weekly market, where stallholders sell fresh, locally grown produce, and handmade crafts.

From here it’s a short stroll to Battery Point, an area of pretty colonial cottages and more imposing historic buildings. Stop in at the Maritime Museum of Tasmania and learn about early explorers, the local whaling history, shipwrecks, and Aboriginal bark canoes.

After a wander around the calm, yacht-filled waterfront and the compact town centre, make your way to Mount Wellington, which stands on Hobart’s doorstep. On a clear day you can see one third of the island from its summit.

Day 2
From Hobart travel inland to Mount Field National Park for a short walk through a temperate rainforest to the scenic Russell Falls. Look out for beautiful tree ferns and towering swamp gums, the tallest flowering plant on Earth.

Head slowly across country to the picturesque fishing village of Strahan, on the island’s far west coast. Along the way is the mining town of Queenstown, which is surrounded by colourful, moon-like hills.

In Strahan hop aboard a steam train and take a ride back to Queenstown on the West Coast Wilderness Railway. This spectacular 35-kilometre (22 mile) rail journey takes in massive hand-hewed rock cuttings, ancient rainforests, and plunging gorges. A coach returns you to Strahan.

Day 3
You can get an idea of the size and beauty of the World Heritage-listed wilderness around here by flying over it in a seaplane. You can immerse yourself in the beauty and peacefulness of the pristine Gordon River by exploring by kayak. You can take a boat cruise into the wilderness too.

Day 4
Next stop is Cradle Mountain, where you could stay the night in a first class lodge. This spectacular area consists of button grass plains, alpine forests and dozens of lakes. Take a stroll around Dove Lake, formed by glaciation in this region over 10,000 years ago.

In the evening, go on a guided wildlife tour to see nocturnal animals, including Tasmanian devils, wombats, wallabies, and marsupial ‘cats’ called quolls.

Day 5
You won’t be in a hurry to leave the natural world of beautiful of Cradle Mountain, and if you had around six more days to spare you could hike Australia’s best-known walking trail, the Overland Track.

Still, you can trek to the summit of Cradle Mountain, and get close to Tasmanian Devils. This sanctuary is working hard to help conserve this iconic meat-eating marsupial through a breeding program.

Day 6
Start early today and drive to the other side of the island. Pass through the historic city of Launceston, and head towards Freycinet National Park. This stunning area features craggy pink peaks, coastal dunes, heathland and chalk-white beaches.

In the afternoon you could take a dolphin cruise, enjoy local delicacies at an oyster farm, or paddle a sea kayak along the sheltered coastline.

Day 7
Start off with a short uphill walk to the Wineglass Bay Lookout for breathtaking views. You can continue hiking for hours if you wish, along beaches and past shell middens – seashell refuse heaps. These grew up over thousands of years ago, thanks to the local Aborigines.

A pleasant drive along the east coast eventually brings you back to Hobart, just in time for a seafood meal overlooking the harbour.

During NSW Seniors Week, ACON and Queerscreen are presenting two films about older lesbians (Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement) and an iconic gay man (An Englishman in New York).

The afternoon delight includes a movie matinee and tea party (served by charming matinee guydolls) at the Chauvel Cinema Paddington Town Hall on 27 March from noon.

All this for free or gold coin donation. Contact ACON and see you at the cinema!

Ask Dee: French Fling Destination

Q.  I want a very French fling, but don't want to spend 24 hours in the air to get to Gay Paree. Is there an affordable French Territory closer to Australia and gay friendly?

A.  Yes, New Caledonia.  Two hours away from Brisbane and 2.5 hours from Sydney International Airports – and you don’t need a visa if you carry a valid passport from Australia or New Zealand.

A s k   D e e
South Pacific Lesbian & Gay Tourism Specialist

New Caledonia Tourism welcomes lesbian and gay travellers, as does the international air carrier Aircalin, both of whom are now members of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association.

Locally, you are welcome to attend events and parties organised by Homo-Sphere in the capital city, Noumea. (Their site and Facebook page are in Francais but the staff speak Anglais.)

I have personally inspected a dozen properties in New Caledonia, from the bargain end to the luxury retreat. New Caledonia has something for everyone’s budget, so you can sleep well but still have money left over to indulge in gourmet food that New Caledonia is so famous for in the Paris end of the South Pacific.

For recommended gay welcoming hotels, please contact the Rainbow Tourism Concierge.
